Our Programmes
Natural Resource Management
Natural Resource Management programme aims at integrating ecological sustainability and climate resilience of natural resources and societal development. The focus areas are watersheds and coastal landscapes, and coastal ecosystems. The coastal zone of India is endowed with a variety of landscapes and ecosystems, including mangroves, coral reefs, sand dunes, and sea grass beds. The coastal zone is also an area of intensive agriculture and is rich in fishery resources. It is also a zone of high population density and industrial development, impacting the natural endowments of the coastal zone in many ways, such as habitat fragmentation and degradation, pollution, coastline erosion, loss of biodiversity etc. The problem relating to the sustainability and resilience of coastal ecosystems and their resources and livelihood of depending communities are aggravated by climate change and its manifestations, such as sea level rise, storm surges and coastal flooding. The SPEED trust is addressing these issues with the participation of the stakeholders, including local community.
Sustainable Livelihood
Sustainable livelihood programme aims to enhance the Five Capitals of Livelihood at the household and community levels in rural areas. These capitals include Human Capital, Social Capital, Physical Capital, Natural Capital, and Financial Capital. In rural areas, livelihood situations are a result of interactions between exogenous and endogenous influences. Exogenous influences include natural calamities such as cyclones, floods, droughts etc., whereas endogenous influences are more concerned with negative impacts within the family or community, like access rights, control over resources, changes in policies, etc. Poor human and social capitals affect the establishment of other capitals of sustainable livelihood. These issues are addressed by working with various partners and stakeholders, primarily government organizations, local self-government (Panchayat Raj Institutions) and community-based organizations.
Nutrition and Health
The Global Hunger Index (2020), which is calculated on the basis of total undernourishment of the population, child stunting, wasting and child mortality, places India at the 94th spot among 107 countries. High prevalence of low birth weight, high morbidity and mortality in children and poor maternal nutrition of the mother continue to be major nutritional concerns in India. The crisis of child malnutrition in India has often been attributed to historical antecedents such as poverty, inequality, and food shortage. Strategies to improve nutritional status includes improving maternal nutrition, preconceptional maternal nutritional status of rural young girls, identifying and enhancing access to functional food specific to different rural settings, awareness and effective implementation of all the present government initiatives and programmes.
Community Development
Increasing leadership capacity, skills, confidence, and aspirations of the rural people and empowering them technically and socially to identify and solve problems, promoting inclusion, social justice, self-determination and collective action are some of the focus areas of the SPEED under its Community Development programme.
